A list of terms you may come across as you travel through my blog…
(note: this is a permanent WIP)
| Animal Logic | Probably Australia’s biggest visual effects house, situated at Fox Studios, Sydney. Won fame through the Oscar-winning film Happy Feet. |
| Flipbook | A term from Shake where an image sequence is rendered to the machine’s RAM buffer to create a video preview. Slightly different in the context of rendering where in that case the image sequence is written out to disk. |
| Fuel | Fuel International. A visual effects house based in Newtown, Sydney where I’ve worked on several projects. |
| ILM Curse | Industrial Light and Magic (ILM), the premier visual effects facility based in San Francisco. Began with Star Wars in 1977 and pioneered most of the technology in VFX production today. After a string of back-to-back oscar wins they went on a drought following Forrest Gump in 1994 as other facilities emerged on the scene, and there was a perceived resentment against ILM for their previous successes and supposed “establishment” bias against creator-owner George Lucas. Despite superior VFX in films like the Star Wars prequel trilogy and War of the Worlds they still missed out on the award. This drought was broken in 2006 when they won for Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man’s Chest. |
| Maya | Autodesk’s 3d animation and modelling program. Common in use through all major VFX facilities and probably the most common 3d program used in film production. |
| Render | Rendering is the process of generating an image from a model or image process, by means of computer programs. |
| Shake | Apple’s node based compositing program currently at version 4.5. My most commonly used compositing tool. |
| TVC | Abbreviation of TeleVision Commercial. Like TV show work, is considered “shortform”. |
| VFX | Usually the written (and spoken) abbreviation of Visual Effects. |
| Web 2.0 | Web 2.0, a phrase coined by O’Reilly Media in 2004, refers to a perceived second-generation of Web-based services—such as social networking sites, wikis, communication tools, and folksonomies—that emphasize online collaboration and sharing among users. |
| WIP | Work In Progress – ’nuff said. |
